The UK Office for National Statistics is developing new methods for producing population statistics that make full use of administrative data. The methods build on Bayesian demographic accounts, which combine ideas from formal demography with ideas from Bayesian statistics. The biggest methodological challenge has been scaling up: going from tiny case studies to a production system that can deal with detailed demographic data for 331 Local Authorities. The presentation will discuss (in non-technical terms) some of the innovations that have supported this scaling-up, including a modular workflow, and a novel computational approach that relies on some venerable demographic concepts.
Dr John Bryant is a demographer and data scientist and the Director of Bayesian Demography Limited.
This semester, we invite all of our guests to bring their lunch and join us for a casual social gathering before the seminar. Unless otherwise advertised, lunch will be held in the seminar room from 12.30pm with the seminar commencing at 1.00pm.
